There are different feed requirements at different stages of production. Sheep need high energy feeds during the moulting period. During the period of pregnancy the ration should be at the level of maintenance requirements. Protein should be increased during this period. During the high period of pregnancy, nutrient requirements increase due to foetal and mammary gland development. Higher digestibility is required. Add concentrated feeds to the main ration, as the ability to consume feed is reduced due to foetal development. In the suckling phase, nutrient requirements are determined by milk yield. For breeding rams, the ration should be adapted to the maintenance requirements outside the breeding season. Additional energy and protein should be given during the breeding season.

In goats, feeding lasts a long time or all day long. Therefore hay and straw should always be available for free consumption. Crude fibre is necessary for the formation of milk fat. Therefore, the crude fibre content of the total diet should be 18 %. In the early part of pregnancy, feeding is based on health maintenance needs, and in the later part of pregnancy (about 3-4 weeks before parturition), energy requirements should be adjusted. In the first two months of lactation, about 1.5 kg of concentrated feed should be fed in addition to the basic ration.
